How AI can help Climate Change
Artificial intelligence (AI) is here to stay and you can see that it is starting to have an impact on our day to day lives. But surely it has to be much more than a human productivity tool. If it really is as ground breaking as some of the vendors are making out can it be applied to some of the bigger challenges facing the planet?
Well the good news is that it can and in this article we take a look at how AI can play a significant role in addressing climate change.
- Scientists help us understand what environmental changes are taking place, but lets face it, it's a big world and there's a huge amount of diverse data involved. Luckily forming patterns from large volumes of data is what AI is great out. So AI can be used in predicting and monitoring weather patterns, tracking iceberg movement, monitoring deforestation and even tracking icebergs. This helps scientists understand and respond to environmental changes more effectively.
- Energy usage is a key driver of climate change. AI can be used to improve energy efficiency by optimizing power storage and distribution, integrating renewable energy sources like solar and wind into the grid and predict changing demand patterns to maximize the use of green energy sources. It can also be used to design energy efficient buildings, streets and towns.
- We all need to eat and agriculture is a key part of global food supply chains. Farming has its critics due to the use of pesticides and its intensive nature but AI can actually enhance agricultural practices. It can predict demand, predict crop yields, optimize irrigation and reduce the environmental impact of farming.
- The impact of climate change is making itself evident in more extreme weather patterns. Be they storms, wildfires or floods, AI can be used to help predict these natural disasters which allows for better preparation and response events.
- The problem with climate change is we know it's happening but the long term effects could be many fold. AI can take climate modelling to the next level, enabling more accurate simulations of future climate scenarios and assessing risks and opportunities for businesses and infrastructure.
- Climate change will impact each and every one of us and each of us contributes to climate change. But how aware are we of our own carbon footprints and how we can do that. AI will increasingly be used to suggest more climate friendly actions we can take.
These are just a few examples of how AI is being leveraged to combat climate change. It’s a powerful tool that, when used responsibly, can significantly contribute to a more sustainable future. 🌍
